Two great song cycles framing the first performance of a new song cycle, Soul Candles, by Newport-born composer Mark Bowden to words by Gwyneth Lewis, National Poet of Wales. The 50th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’ death is marked by a performance of his Songs of Travel; one of his first great masterpieces, the songs trace a man’s journey through life, underpinned by music of wonderful melodic freshness and vitality. Schumann’s Liederkreis is charged with a wonderful sense of romantic fantasy, of castles, moonlight and enchanted forests.
