Twm Sion Catti – Portrait for String Orchestra (First Performance – Festival Commission)
Respighi
Il Tramonto
Dvořák
Serenade in E major, Op.22
Meet Stringendo – a new string orchestra made up of some of South Wales’ finest young string players under their conductor Peter Esswood. Their debut programme includes Dvořák’s serene and tranquil Serenade – the perfect work for a midsummer’s evening and Mendelssohn’s charming B minor String Symphony – an extraordinary work written when he was just fourteen. The exploits of hell-raiser and anarchist Twm Sion Catti has entertained many generations within Wales – Mervyn Burtch’s is drawn from his new opera for children (see page 3) and has been specially commissioned for this performance. Finally, a rarity – Respighi’s Il Tramonto (The Sunset), a setting of Shelley’s poem recalling the passion of youth in old age.
