A Venetian Carnival
Rapturous music from St Mark’s, contrasting with the mists of the lagoon and the revelries and gaiety of Carnival: a musical tale of La Serenissima woven with contemporary 17th and 18th century literary descriptions.
Seventeenth century Venice was home to many of the greatest composers of the time and a centre of musical, artistic and cultural excellence, with composers and artists alike coming from all over Europe to taste her delights. Containing ravishing songs and duets by Monteverdi, Albinoni, Lotti and the spirited and fascinating Barbara Strozzi, set alongside the splendid instrumental music of Vivaldi and Marcello, this programmes captures the life and vitality of La Serenissima in all her glory.
