Freddy Kempf (piano)
St Michael’s Church, Lower Machen
| Beethoven | Sonata No.29 in B flat, Op.106 (Hammerklavier) |
| Chopin | Ballade No.1 in G minor, Op.23 |
| Chopin | Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58 |
Freddy Kempf’s big break came when he didn’t win the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1998. The audience complained, the Russian press protested and he shot to prominence overnight. Since then he has been acknowledged as one of the world’s leading young pianists and has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras.
His recital at Lower Machen contains one of the pinnacles of the piano repertoire: Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata, written as deafness encroached upon him and a work of such power and elemental force that tests every pianist (and piano), even 190 years after it was written.
“He has the fearless exuberance of youth, is prepared to take risks ,a readiness that brings spontaneous combustion to his playing; but he has sensitivity too.” Daily Telegraph
“Kempf's brilliance is captivating” The Guardian
