St Michael’s Church, Lower Machen
Join the Festival’s Quartet-in-residence, the Bingham Quartet for a birthday – Shostakovich’s 100th. In his powerful and dramatic Piano Quintet they are joined by Kazakhstan-born Evgenia Startseva, whose performances at last year’s Festival caused a sensation. Also on the programme is one of Haydn’s wittiest quartets and Elgar’s only string quartet – written in the dying days of the First World War, it is a powerful lament for the passing of worlds. “Evgenia is a very sensitive, talented and powerful musician, whose playing strives for the greatest meaning and emotion.” Maxim Vengerov Tickets £9.50 & £7.50 (Concessions) This concert is sponsored by Mrs Elizabeth Phillips in memory of her husband, David, a true supporter of the Festival.
